Abstract

INTRODUCTION. Blood transfusion-related diseases are a public health problem worldwide.
OBJECTIVES. To determine the seroprevalence of Hepatitis C Virus, central and surface antigens of Hepatitis B Virus, Human Immunodeficiency Virus, type 1 and 2 Human T-lymphotropic Virus, T. pallidum and T. cruzi in blood donors of the Complejo Hospitalario Metropolitano Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid between years 2008 and 2010.
MATERIALS AND METHODS. We retrospectively analyzed the records of the Blood Bank of the Complejo Hospitalario Metropolitano Dr. Arnulfo Arias Madrid between the years 2008 and 2010. Reactive donations were identified by infectious antigens in the screening and confirmatory test. We conducted a demographic description of the population, and calculated the seroprevalence by year.
RESULTS. In the period of study there were 57 062 blood donations. We identified 44 (0.07%) donations reactive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, 661 (1.2%) Hepatitis B Virus Core antigen, 37 (0.06%) Hepatitis B Virus Surface antigen, 26 (0.04%) Hepatitis C Virus, 77 (0.13%) by Human Lymphotropic Virus type 1 and 2, 428 (0.75%) for T. pallidum and 129 (0.22%) for T. cruzi.
CONCLUSIONS. The seroprevalence of antigens of Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis C virus, type 1 and 2 Human T-lymphotropic virus, Hepatitis B Virus Hepatitis B virus surface and core, T. pallidum and T. cruzi was 0.07%, 0.04%, 0.13, 0.06%, 1.2%, 0.75% and 0.22%, respectively.
